Game Jam Day 4 - HUDs, Menus, and a New Level - Oh My!

Today was a productive day on the game thanks to a lighter day at work! Let's get right into things!

Heads Up Display:

I got my HUD looking a lot closer to what I want. I could still add some fun to it with some animations, but that might not get done in time for the deadline. The field of view in my headset is much more limited than the flat screen shown when I debug the game, but I wanted to show off the difference between my old HUD and the updated one:

Old HUD

New HUD

One of the neat parts of my HUD is the combo display list. It shrinks the text as the combo gets longer so the tracker doesn't interfere too much with your vision.

Level End Menus

I added a recap at the end of each level to show the player their final score. The menu allows the player to quit the game, move on to the next level, or go back to the main menu. The menu gets automatically added to the end of each level, and to extend the game, I just need to add a name and scene path for each new level added in the order I want them played. To end a level, the player just needs to walk off the starting surface. The game then allows the player to walk around a bit and ensures there are no active combos before ending the level.

Credits

I hooked up the credits button from the main menu, so it shows the appropriate credits. This one isn't as exciting as the other parts of the update, but still fun to make regardless!

Another Level

As you may have seen in the HUD images, a new level has appeared! I created a couple new office supplies in Blender and added them to my level template. It came together in just a couple hours.

Here are some of my blender objects that I made

What's Next

I got 3 of my 4 must haves done today, with the only one left being music and sounds. I'll likely get through that all tomorrow. With my updated timeline, I might be able to get some more nice to haves done! Here are my priorities in order:

  1. Music and Sound effects
  2. Smooth out the transition at the end of the level. I might have the HUD fade to black since my end of level menu is black
  3. Get a pause menu working
  4. Add instructions or a "How To Play" helper so that others know what to do in the game to earn points and how to end a level. This should be accessible from the pause menu and the starting menu
  5. Add 1 more level. I think a kitchen would be a fun location
  6. Create builds for devices other than the Quest and distribute for testing/publishing
